Book Report

The American Heritage Picture of History WWII by C.L. Sulzberger

Book Report

In the book WWII by C.L. Sulzberger you will find just about anything you need to know about world war 2. It has almost every battle fought in ww2 in it and every important person. it talks about Hitler and how he broke the Treaty of Versailles. Also battles like pearl harbor, D-day and more.

This book would be a very good resource to anyone trying to do a report on world war two. The book would also be good to some one who just wants to learn more about world war two. It is a great book to read and is very interesting. Especially for a person who is interested in the history of war. War history is something that I personally think is really cool. If war history is something you are interested in then this book is perfect for you. The book gave me more than enough information on what I needed. The book also has interviews from soldiers done by reporters sent to be with the soldiers and make reports back to news papers in America. For instance one of the sections in the book is titled “Blueberry Pie” the soldiers are asking the reporter questions about the world outside of their battle stations. Such as how are the other posts doing? Who is winning the war? Etc. the reporter knew they didn’t want the answers they were just asking the questions to ask. The reporter stops and thinks and he asks the men in the war “What are you fighting for?” in the section of the book he explains that the men get quiet and think about and man says “I would give anything for some warm blueberry pie.” but he goes on to explain that they didn’t care about the pie what they meant was that they are fighting for the freedom of the people back in the United States so that they can keep their rights an not have to worry about not putting food on the table. The book is packed full of articles and stories from the war. It is very interesting how the people involved in the war started thinking of all the people back home. They realized that they were fighting so that they could live how they always have. This book puts everything in a different perspective when thinking about the war and what its like. It is a amazing book any body looking for a good read would love it. The book is a great project for some kid in a history class or writing class. Anyone who wants to know more about world war two should definitely get this book.

The book helped me get through this project. It will help any body get better perspective on the world war 2 battles. Overall the book was great I would recommend this book to anyone writing a report on world war two. It was interesting and it made me feel like I was reading someone’s personal story on the war not just a documentary. It was filled with information and perfect for the class I needed it for.

Battle of Iwo Jima

The battle of Iwo Jima lasted from Feb 19th until March 26th in 1945. In the battel America invaded the Japanese island trying to take over three air fields in the area. This attack was one of the first attacks on Japan from America on Japans home islands. The island was packed with under ground tunnels and bunkers the only way American troops were able to push on was because of the naval and air support. Iwo Jima is remembered mostly for being the battle that killed the most American troops of any other battle. Everyone thought the invasion of the island was useless put it proved its use when bombers sent to drop bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had to land there. The U.S. won the battle at Iwo Jima and the death to for Japan compared to America was 3:1.

Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor was what made the United States join World War 2. On December 7, 1941 the Japanese planned a suprise attack on the naval base Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor is located on the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii. The battle only lasted two hours but it was a devastating lose to the United States. In the time it took the Japanese pilots to drop there bombs they destroyed 20 vessels, eight of them battleships and almost 200 airplanes. The United States lost an astonishing 2000 soldiers and sailors and another 1000 were wounded. After the attack on Pearl Harbor Franklin D. Roosevelet declared war on Japan. Congress approved and this ultimately is what brought america into World War 2.

Batlle of Midway

The Battle of Midway lasted from June 4-7 in 1942. The battle was between Japanese and U.S. forces in the United States mid-pacific air base Midway. Japan attacked Midway trying to destroy the U.S. Pacific fleets air craft carrier stiking forces. Japan wanted to do this because the carriers stiking force had humiliated the Japanese Air-Force twice. Once in mid-April the Doolittle raid and another time at the Battle of Coral Sea in early May. Japan planned to knock down Midways defenses and invade the base. After the invasion Japan wanted to create their own base in place of Midway. The Japanese plans to take out the carrier were identified by American forces before Japan could attack the carrier and war ships were already waiting and defeated the Japanese forces.

Invasion of Normandy 1944

The invasion of Normandy is also know as D-day. The ivasion of Normandy began June 6, 1944 the American forces and its allies took over Normandy Beach from the Germans. Normanday is located on the north eastern coast of France the American General leading the group was General Dwight D. Eisenhower. They called the operation Operation Overlord. Before the actual invasion allies of the American forces dropped paratroopers behind the Germans enemy lines. The paratroopers sabatoged the Germans weapons whiched helped in the United States invade Normandy.

Causes of WW2

A few things that started the second world war were problems created by the first world war.One of the main causes of the second world war was when Hitler broke the Treaty of Versailles. He wanted to regain the land that Germany had lost from the first world war and had to break the Treaty in order to gain his land. He invaded Poland and got part of his land back. Another reason that that WW2 started was that Germany's allies also started using aggression to gain more power. Italy wanted a fascist-Roman empire in the Mediterranean and in Africa. Japan wanted a Nipponese Empire in the Pacific that also extended into China and into Australia. Germany and its allies were used hostile actions towards communism to get these things all of them played a role in starting the second World War
